Typhoon Shanshan — Shipment Update
Typhoon Shanshan's erratic path across Japan caused a one-day delay to this week's shipment, but operations from Friday through Sunday are unaffected. The fish is here. This week's Bluefin Tuna features the leaner summer cuts — strong Akami, genuine but less fatty Otoro — consistent with what we've been carrying through August. We return to our primary supplier Hosei Suisan next week, which will be a noticeable step up.
We still do not have Yellowtail or Sea Urchin this week — both remain affected by the red tide and typhoon disruption. Yellowtail returns in September; Uni we are monitoring closely.
Moving to Rice Market — Starting Next Week
This is the announcement we have been building toward: starting next week, Sashimi DC will be operating permanently from the basement of Rice Market, 1608 14th St NW, Lower Level, Washington DC.
Rice Market is one of the most interesting food destinations in DC — a carefully curated Asian grocery, specialty food hall, and event space that shares our conviction that provenance and quality matter. Operating from inside Rice Market means a physical home for the first time: a counter where you can see the fish, talk about it, taste it, and take it home the same day.
We will receive fish deliveries and start selling over the counter from Thursday. Rice Market staff will be able to sell our fish on all seven days, 11:30 am to 8:00 pm, whether Keita is present or not. This is the transition from a delivery-only operation to a true storefront.
What Changes — Pricing and Packaging
Two practical changes come with the move to a physical counter:
- Weight-based pricing: Most items will now be priced by actual weight — larger pieces priced higher, smaller pieces lower, for the same fish and cut. This is how a proper fish counter works and it's fairer to everyone. Online ordering will sync to the new system as we update it.
- Insulated bag and ice pack: We are introducing a $1 charge for the insulated bag and ice pack, which have been complimentary until now. This is to encourage customers to bring their own bag back for reuse rather than accumulating single-use cold-chain packaging. Bring your bag; we'll fill it.
Upcoming Events
- San-J Open House — September 15, Richmond VA. We will be there with sashimi and San-J Tamari pairings. San-J →
- Vinomorphy: Autumn Equinox + Haiku — September 19, Rice Market. We contribute fish snacks to this cocktail and poetry event.
- Wine & Fish Pairing — September 29, Rice Market. Tickets are sold out for the first session; more dates will follow.
- Sake Day DC — September 29, hosted by DC Sake Co. An annual celebration of World Sake Day (October 1st) with close to 100 different sakes. One of the best events of the year in DC for anyone curious about sake. We won't be there this year due to a scheduling conflict, but it's strongly worth attending.
